STATEMENT FROM INSULATE BRITAIN ON YET ANOTHER INJUNCTION HEARING

28 October 2021, 10:30

The blanket injunction granted to National Highways on Monday is being considered in the High Court today. The injunction, which prohibits people from Insulate Britain, and anyone else, from protesting on any part of the strategic road network in England is breathtaking in its scope and a massive overreach. It appears to contradict the Ziegler ruling which determined that obstruction of the highway as a form of protest was lawful in certain circumstances. [1]

The latest injunction is one of four temporary injunctions granted to National Highways and Transport for London in recent weeks. The injunction was granted in the absence of representatives from Insulate Britain, who now have a right to apply for a variation in its terms or to argue that it should not have been granted.

In a few days time, world leaders are gathering in Glasgow for COP26, an event of monumental importance for the future of humanity. At this time the government should be focussing on showing true leadership. It should be setting an example to the world by getting on with the job of cutting carbon emissions and defending our country. Instead of which, it is choosing to waste time and money by applying for endless injunctions against Insulate Britain.

We agree that disrupting everyday life for ordinary people is unacceptable. The failure of   Boris Johnson and his government to cut carbon emissions will lead to endless disruption of everyday life for ordinary people. So we have to ask, what should you do when your government is betraying you? This is the reality of our situation. Through its refusal to take even the basic first step  to save carbon by insulating our homes,  our government is signing a death warrant. It is condemning thousands to death through fuel poverty and contributing to the death of millions through slaughter and starvation as the climate and society collapses. That is treason.

From the start,  the government has been able to put Insulate Britain in front of a judge. So take us to court, we stand by our actions and are ready to defend them. We have a right of necessity to cause disruption, to prevent the far greater destruction of our economy and way of life. We know and accept our responsibilities as citizens – to rise up against a treasonous government and to defend our country against tyranny.

[2] About Insulate Britain

Insulate Britain is a new campaign group that is calling on the UK government to put in place policy and funding for a national home insulation programme starting with all social housing.

We demand the Prime Minister and the government to #getonwiththejob, face up to their responsibility and lead our country through the climate crisis.

We are ordinary British citizens with simple and achievable demands to #INSULATEBRITAIN

The UK government must immediately promise to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain.

We demand a national home insulation strategy that gives British people the justice they deserve: a future for our loved ones, lower energy bills and safer living conditions.

We are scared: our livelihoods are at risk and the futures of our children are uncertain

The Climate Crisis is a threat to all: we demand the government to act now.

Our Demands

1. That the UK government immediately promises to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain by 2025;

2. That the UK government immediately promises to produce within four months a legally binding national plan to fully fund and take responsibility for the full low-energy and low-carbon whole-house retrofit , with no externalised costs, of all homes in Britain by 2030 as part of a just transition to full decarbonisation of all parts of society and the economy.
