INSULATE BRITAIN’S RESPONSE TO THE HOME SECRETARY’S SPEECH

6 October, 2021

Insulate Britain responds to the Home Secretary’s speech at the Conservative Party conference on 5th October, in which she promised tougher penalties for anyone blocking roads, as well as a new criminal offence for interfering with critical national infrastructure.

Our response:

We remain more fearful of the loss of our country than we do of the Home Secretary. The law can be changed, punishments increased, our savings raided, we face being imprisoned.  But shooting the messenger can never destroy the message: our country is facing the greatest risk ever and our government is failing us.

We believe that the reality of our situation has to be faced. The collapse of the climate is happening around us. We face economic chaos and the breakdown of law and order in a matter of years. We will lose our incomes, pensions, and savings while passing on an unwanted legacy to our children. They will be rightly furious. Around the world thousands of millions of people will lose their lives through slaughter and starvation as society collapses.

Government ministers, including Priti Patel, will go down in history as cowards who did not have the guts to look reality in the face. They will go down in history as traitors who destroyed this country because they did not face up to their responsibility to protect and lead.

If the Home Secretary believes, as she says, that our acts are outrageous and illegal, and if she believes there is no right of necessity for citizens to cause disruption to prevent the infinitely greater threat of destruction to our economy and way of life, then she has a duty to act decisively. Take us to court, charge us, and put us in prison. The government should have the courage to deal with this, one way or the other.

We have to come together otherwise we will die together. That is what Insulate Britain supporters are saying to the country as they sit in the roads day after day, calling on Boris to get on with job and insulate Britain. We are not going anywhere because there is nowhere left to go. The country is waiting to hear what the government has to say in response.

Insulate Britain is calling on the UK government to put in place policy and funding for a national home insulation programme starting with all social housing. We demand the Prime Minister and the government, face up to their responsibility and lead our country through the climate crisis. Our actions will continue until the government makes a meaningful statement indicating its intention to insulate all of Britain’s 29 million leaky homes by 2030, and all social housing by 2025.

Our policy is, and has always been, to facilitate emergency vehicles displaying ‘blue lights’,  including ambulances and fire engines, to pass through roadblocks.

About Insulate Britain

Insulate Britain is a new campaign group that is calling on the UK government to put in place policy and funding for a national home insulation programme starting with all social housing.

We demand the Prime Minister and the government to #getonwiththejob, face up to their responsibility and lead our country through the climate crisis.

We are ordinary British citizens with simple and achievable demands to #INSULATEBRITAIN

The UK government must immediately promise to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain

We demand a national home insulation strategy that gives British people the justice they deserve: a future for our loved ones, lower energy bills and safer living conditions

We are scared: our livelihoods are at risk and the futures of our children are uncertain

The Climate Crisis is a threat to all: we demand the government to act now

Our Demands

1. That the UK government immediately promises to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain by 2025;

2. That the UK government immediately promises to produce within four months a legally binding national plan to fully fund and take responsibility for the full low-energy and low-carbon whole-house retrofit , with no externalised costs, of all homes in Britain by 2030 as part of a just transition to full decarbonisation of all parts of society and the economy.
