38 ARRESTED AS INSULATE BRITAIN BLOCKS M25 FOR FIFTH TIME

21 September 2021 PM –

Insulate Britain blocked the M25 in both directions near Junction 10 this morning as 38 people joined the fifth round of protests.  There have been 338 arrests in total during the protests which started over a week ago.

Insulate Britain is demanding that government gets on with the job of insulating Britain’s homes starting with the homes of the poorest people in the country.   [1]

Some new people joined the protest this morning along with some who have participated in all five actions to date.

Noting that civil disobedience seems to be one of those things that is only popular when it is in the past, Annie, 63 retired from Dorset (the granddaughter of a Suffragette) said:

“Joining these actions has been an incredibly hard thing to do, but we’re not expecting to be popular.

“It is a fact that now 2.5 million homes in the UK are in fuel poverty. It is a fact that children in poorly insulated and cold homes already struggle with their homework and it is a fact that the parents of these children have to make a choice between heating or eating. In my opinion, in Britain in the twenty-first century that is totally unacceptable.”

Len Herbert, 65 a retired engineer from Dorset said:

“I would rather not block roads, but for years I have participated in every other form of activity to try and get our government to take notice of the climate and ecological emergency. But they continue to ignore the scientists. Insulating homes is a quick win to reduce carbon emissions and would hugely help this and reduce bills for those in fuel poverty.”

Both Annie and Len have taken part in the Insulate Britain campaign and have been held in custody multiple times over the last week.

About Insulate Britain

Insulate Britain is a new campaign group that is calling on the UK government to put in place policy and funding for a national home insulation programme starting with all social housing.

We demand the Prime Minister and the government to #getonwiththejob, face up to their responsibility and lead our country through the climate crisis.

We are ordinary British citizens with simple and achievable demands to #INSULATEBRITAIN

The UK government must immediately promise to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain

We demand a national home insulation strategy that gives British people the justice they deserve: a future for our loved ones, lower energy bills and safer living conditions

We are scared: our livelihoods are at risk and the futures of our children are uncertain

The Climate Crisis is a threat to all: we demand the government to act now

Our Demands

1. That the UK government immediately promises to fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain by 2025;

2. That the UK government immediately promises to produce within four months a legally binding national plan to fully fund and take responsibility for the full low-energy and low-carbon whole-house retrofit , with no externalised costs, of all homes in Britain by 2030 as part of a just transition to full decarbonisation of all parts of society and the economy.
